The mate, part of crew and about 160 of the passengers have been landed here by the Nais, Granby, from Leith, for Charente; the remainder of the crew and passengers (99 in number) have landed at Harwich, with the exception of the second mate, four females, and two of the crew of the schooner, who drifted away to leeward, and made for the Kentish Knock, Light vessel. Wreck of two Emigrant Ships-North Foreland, Tuesday Nigh. With considerableregret we announce two deplorable shipwrecks of German emigrant vessels, with between 300 and 400 passengers on hoard, which took place in the course of last night and this morning, on the Long and Goodwin Sands. The unfortunate vessels were both from Bremen-one the American-built ship Burgundy, Mr. Hunt, master, 500 tons burden, with 300 emigrants, for New Orleans; the other the barque Atlantic,Mr. Foster, belonging to Bremen, bound for New York, also with passengers (the number not exactly known). The greater part of yesterday the weather was exceeding boisterous, the wind blowing NNW, theevening setting in with a hazy atmosphere. Nothing is known of the passage from Bremen, until the discovery of the vessel on the above-named sands. It appears that between 10 and 11 o'clock last night the report of signal-guns of distress was heard in the direction of the Long Sands a shoal some miles in length, extending nearly north and south between the Kentish Knock and the Sunk Sand, and about 35 miles distant from this point northward. Several smacks, as sell as Her Majesty's revenue cutter Desmond, bore down in the direction to ascertain the cause. On nearing the centre bank of the sands in question a large vessel was discovered completely on the shoal, almost engulfed in heavy breakers. She proved to be the Burgundy, having, it was reported, been carried on by the rapidity of thecurrents about 10 o’clock. It: was impracticable to get her off, and her destruction seemed inevitable. The crews of the surrounding vessels, on ascertaining the great number of human beings on board, lost no time in arranging a plan for their rescue, which was providentially successful, for the whole of the poor creatures, numbering between 200 and 300, including the crew, were safely taken off the wreck. Their condition, as may readily be imagined, was truly deplorable, most of them, says our informant, being reduced to a state of complete destitution. Some were landed by her Majesty's revenue cutter at Harwich, and others at different places along the coast. A large number had been taken by a French schooner it is conjectured, to the French coast. The long sands has two lightships, oneat each extremity of it, sufficient to warn the mariner of danger; probably, however, the hazy state of the astrosphere obscured the lights. The wreck of the Atlantic was discovered yesterday morningon the Goodwin. She had got on the outside of the sands, and was fast settling down, when several Ramsgate and Deal luggers came to her succour. Although the weather was fine a tremendous sea raged on the sands, sweeping over the ill-fated vessel every instant. Four lives had already been lost the master; two passengers, and a boy, who it is stated, were swept overboard, and not seen afterwards. With great difficulty the Deal boatmen succeeded in saving the crew and some of the passengers, while the remainder of the latter were taken of by several Ramsgate vessels, and conveyed to that port and those adjacent. -- The Hull Packet and East Riding Times 24th November 1848 Loss of the Ship Burgundy - We are happy to learn that 162 of the passengers saved from the wreck of the Burgundy, and some of the crew, have been landed at Ramsgate. These persons are entirely indebted to Captain Granby, of theschooner Nais, and his crew, for their preservation. A meeting of the magistrates and inhabitants of Ramsgate was held on the 15th November, when a resolution was unanimously passed conveying the thanks of the meeting to Captain Granby and his crew for their gallant conduct in rescuing so many persons under circumstances of great peril and difficulty. -- Liverpool Journal March 10th 1849 Reward for heroic conduct A valuable snuff box has been presented to Mr Charles Granby, master of the schooner NAIS of this port by the principal inhabitants of Ramsgate for his noble exertions in saving the crew and passengers of the American ship BURGUNDY recently wrecked on that coast. A document embodying the resolution agreed at a meeting of the magistrates and inhabitants of Ramsgate, John Ashley Warre Esq, high sheriff of Kent in the chair, was presented with the snuff box. -- Liverpool Mercury March 16 1849 A valuable snuff-box has been presented to Mr Charles Granby, master of the schooner Nais, of this port, by the principle inhabitants of Ramsgate, for his nobile exertions in saving the crew and passengers of the American ship Burgundy, recently wrecked on that coast. The BURGUNDY was wrecked on the Long Sand on the 13th November and Charles Granby rescued the 160 passengers and 6 crew, with the sea that prevailed the rescue was one of considerable difficulty and danger, the vessel only approachable at certain times of the tide, the NAIS remained beside the BURGUNDY for 16hrs and looked after the victims till Wednesday last, when they were safely landed at Ramsgate. In addition Capt Granby has received £10 and a silver medal from the RNI and £8 from the Lords of the treasury for distribution amongst his crew. -- From Lloyds register of British and foreign shipping 1st July 1848 – 30 June 1849 Published 1848 -- Ship: Isabel (Brig) 131 Tons Built Mryp’t 1836 Owner: J Procter Hawken Captain: C Granby, Hawken Port Belonging to: Liverpool, Liverpool, Belize Destined voyage: Liverpool, Mediterranean, No years first assigned: 9 Hull A1 -- Ship: Nais (Schooner) 150 Tons Built Newport 1837 (YM 40) Owner: J Procter Captain: J Easton, Granby Port Belonging to: Liverpool Destined voyage: Liverpool, Mediterranean (Cont 48) No years first assigned: 11 Hull A1 -- 1840 Isabel Captain J Cape, C Granby 1840 Nais Captain R Gethng 1850 Nais Captain Granby 1851 Nais Captain Granby 1852 Nais Captain C Granby 1852 Isabel Captain E.
