Thursday 13th March, 7pm, Grand Parade boardroom (M2 on the grand parade campus).
This lecture revisits the scene of a police raid—-not the infamous 1969 raid on New York’s Stonewall Inn, but a less known police action at San Francisco’s New Years Day Ball in 1965. The event was a significant moment of queer resistance to police harassment, and it also featured some unlikely allies: a group of liberal Protestant ministers protested the police tactics and gained front page coverage in San Francisco's newspapers. This lecture analyses these events and the national connections forged by these ministers to illuminate the shape of liberal Protestants’ involvement in the emerging movement for gay rights.
Dr. Heather White will be presenting this Brighton and Sussex Sexualities Network Seminar.
